The county’s youngest anglers will have an opportunity to test their skills against their peers, Saturday, April 9, with the return of the Buncombe County Recreation annual Kids’ fishing tournament at Charles D. Owen Park.

The event, which begins at 8:30 a.m., is open to children ages 15 and under. Registration is $10, and organizers will also collect donations of non-perishable food items for MANNA FoodBank.

The catch-and-release tournament will feature five age groups, with each division receiving prizes for biggest fish, smallest fish, most fish caught and most accurate casting.

Participants must bring their own rods, reels and tackle to compete in the two-and-a-half-hour competition. Fishing licenses are not required for any N.C. residents under the age of 16.

Preregistration is recommended and available online here. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m. the day of the tournament.
