As Owen High School students, staff and alumni celebrated in the stands, Oct. 3, visiting Mitchell stole the spotlight on the field.

The Warhorses fell, 40-7, in their first Western Highlands Conference loss of the season, snapping a two-game winning streak.

Mitchell set the tone early, scoring on a 27-yard rushing touchdown to finish its opening drive and establishing a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Mountaineers held a 28-0 lead at the half, extending their lead until Owen scored in the fourth quarter.

While the Owen offense gained 189 yards on the ground, the fast-paced attack of Mitchell overwhelmed the defense. The Mountaineers punted only once in the contest, as the offense totaled 322 yards.

Owen slipped to 4-3 with the loss, but the showing did little to dampen the spirit at halftime, when principal Dawn Rookey and 2024 Homecoming Queen Jaeda Hall presented cheerleading representative Lily Monosso with this year’s crown. Junior representative Adeline West was named 2025 homecoming princess.

Rounding out the court were two football players, senior Rio Obispo and junior Bear Dasher, who were recognized as king and prince during a pep rally before the game.

The Warhorses will face another conference challenge at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, when they host Hendersonville, which will enter the contest with a 5-1 record and tied for the top spot in the WHC.
