The Warhorses were winners of three straight and four of their last five matches as they took the field, Oct. 6, to host Western Highlands Conference opponent Mountain Heritage.
Within the first 20 minutes, which included four Owen goals, the team was well on its way to extending its streak and remaining within striking distance of a conference title.
Leading goal scorer and co-captain Spencer Woolley notched his first of 4 goals within the first two minutes of play, sliding to his left and drilling a pass from Lyle Sulzman to give the Warhorses a quick lead. Minutes later, fellow senior and co-captain Caden Mobley, who finished with 2 goals of his own, created space against a Cougars defender before turning and firing a shot into the top left corner of the net from around 25 yards out.
Woolley extended the advantage in the 16th minute, dribbling past the opposing goalkeeper to stake Owen to a 3-0 lead, before Sophomore Boone Ferguson added another with a sharp roller through traffic for his sole goal of the contest.
Mobley added his second to give Owen a 5-0 lead at the end of the first half, before Woolley converted a penalty kick within the first minute of the second. Woolley tallied another in the 53rd minute, while the Warhorse defense corralled the Mountain Heritage attack to preserve a clean scoring sheet.
The victory marked the latest in a six-game stretch in which Owen has won five matches, outscoring its opponents by a combined 34-5. It was also the team’s fourth straight victory since falling, Sept. 15, to Polk County.
“I think we’re playing really well, we’re playing the way we want to and it takes a little time to find that groove, especially when you play a lot of tough non-conference teams early on,” fourth-year head coach Trei Morrison said after the match. “We’re a very young team and I think it can be easy to forget that because these guys don’t play like a young team. I’m proud of the for that.”
Some of the underclassmen were given opportunities against the Cougars.
“We have a lot of sophomores in this group, and I could play some of them on junior varsity and we might have a few more JV victories, but we wanted them to get playing time at this level,” Morrison said. “The idea is to get them in this system and have them work on doing the things we do. I’m really happy to see they’re starting to do that and get a little more confident.”
The Warhorses improved to 8-3, overall, and 4-1 in the WHC. With sole possession of second place in the conference, Owen will face the first-place Wolverines at 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Polk County.
“We talked about treating it like another game,” Morrison said. “We know this is where the conference championship could be won or lost, so we have to go out there and perform, but we have to do it the way we want to do it. We have a team that can beat them, even though they have a quality team that is ranked pretty high. But, I believe in our guys, especially if they believe.”
