Just like the tender flowers emerging from the ground, nothing says spring like the start of Bloom WNC Flower Farm’s outdoor concert series. The first concert of the year will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, April 14, and feature beloved Western N.C. singer-songwriter David Childers.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through the BloomWNC.com.

Childers has been writing and performing songs for diverse audiences in a wide range of places for the last 35 years, including the Bloom farm. He plays solo and with a combination of ensembles generally known as “The Serpents.,” featuring Korey Dudley on bass and Robert Childers on drums; both will sing back up vocals.

Singer-songwriter and all-around good guy, Childers latest album - “Melancholy Angel” - was released April 7. He has been playing music since the 1970s, in bands including the acoustic trio Steeltree, the Mount Holly Hellcats and the Modern Don Juans. Each album has its own influences, but folk, rock, bluegrass and gospel all make an appearance.

In addition to being an iconic musician, Childers mentors young performers, one of whom is near and dear to the Black Mountain flower farm. Zachary Warren, who manages Bloom WNC and made his musical debut there in 2021, will open the show with some songs from his debut album “Mama No More.”

This beautiful setting, conveniently located close to downtown Black Mountain, with a sweeping improved lawn and a new stage, hosts only 125 people so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Attendees are asked to bring a chair. Trash and recycling cans are also on premises.

The rustic setting means audiences are vulnerable to the weather, so blankets, jackets or bug spray can offer protection.

Adding to the season opening concert, Ole’s Guacamoles will be on site from 5:15 - 7 p.m. with a taco bar featuring beef, chicken or vegetarian options. This is a $15 cash taco bar, no credit cards accepted. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, but dogs and smoking are prohibited.

The Bloom concert season will continue on Friday, May 15, with Andrew Wakefield.

Bloom WNC Specialty Cut Flower Farm is located at 806 N. Fork Road, and flowers will be available for purchase at intermission.
